As I watch the national conventions unfold, I can't help but think about what they mean for the future, especially regarding technology—a field that's become such a big part of our lives. Our behavior has changed dramatically compared to thirty years ago—pre-internet. With the Democratic National Convention underway and the Republican National Convention behind us, the speakers' lineup gives clues about where each party stands and how they might shape our kids' world.

Since I was born, November marks the 12th presidential election, but the last couple has grabbed my attention. (That dates me!) I'm not just looking at these through the lens of a voter but as a parent, thinking about what kind of world we're building for our children. When I consider the speakers at the DNC, I see more than just policy talk—I see potential paths for the technology that will define the world my kids will inherit.

Politics has changed dramatically, especially in how campaigns are marketed to a younger audience. Endorsements from celebrities have become almost essential. But gone are the days when a celebrity could smile and say a few words. Today, many use this opportunity to speak out on critical issues, influencing votes and public discourse. This significant shift shows how interconnected our social, cultural, and technological landscapes have become.

The Democrats have put labor unions front and center, with leaders from major unions like the AFL-CIO and UAW taking the stage. This event signals a future where technology might be geared more towards protecting workers than replacing them. It's about using tech to enhance jobs, ensure fair wages, and improve working conditions. On the flip side, the Republicans seem more focused on a business-first approach, where technology is seen as a tool to boost profits and efficiency, even if that means more automation and less human labor.

These differences speak to how each party might steer the future of work—and, by extension, the future my kids will step into.

Figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders are pushing for significant changes like universal healthcare, climate action, and higher wages. These aren't just abstract ideas but the changes that could make technology more accessible and equitable. Imagine a world where everyone can access fast internet, quality online education, and healthcare services no matter where they live. On the other hand, the Republicans are talking more about economic nationalism and traditional values, which might mean tech investments focused on national security and defense rather than broad social programs.

Both visions will shape the digital landscape, and our choices will echo in the world my children will navigate.

The Democratic speakers reflect a party serious about diversity, not just as a talking point but as a core value. Leaders like Rep. Lauren Underwood and Rep. Robert Garcia embody this commitment. If this focus translates into action, we might see technology able to uplift marginalized communities to ensure everyone has a voice and a place in this rapidly changing world. The Republicans, while making some strides toward inclusion, seem to focus more on individual liberties and less on systemic change.

The differences here will influence how technology bridges or widens societal gaps.

Women's rights, especially in terms of reproductive health, are front and center for the Democrats. With the ongoing battles over abortion rights, I imagine technology playing a crucial role in expanding access to healthcare. This direction could mean more telemedicine options or apps that provide discreet access to reproductive health services—tools that could be vital for my daughters and their generation. The Republicans, on the other hand, are likely to focus on protecting religious freedoms and promoting traditional values, which could lead to a different kind of tech development, perhaps one that supports those ideals.

When I think about the future environment my kids will inherit, the Democrats' focus on green energy and sustainability resonates deeply. Leaders like Gov. Kathy Hochul advocate for a tech-driven approach to tackling climate change. These choices mean significant investments in renewable energy, smart cities, and technologies that reduce our carbon footprint. The Republicans, meanwhile, seem more inclined to support traditional energy industries while gradually adopting green technologies where it makes economic sense.

The choices made here will determine the kind of planet we leave behind—a thought that weighs heavily on me as a parent.

The Democrats' emphasis on healthcare and education suggests they'll use technology to level the playing field and ensure that quality services are accessible to everyone. This innovation could lead to advancements in telehealth and online education that make a real difference in people's lives. On the other hand, the Republicans might focus on market-driven solutions, encouraging innovation through competition rather than regulation.

Both approaches have their merits, but they reflect different priorities that will shape the tools and opportunities available to future generations.

As the Democrats bring together voices from across their spectrum, from Hillary Clinton to Obama, there's an apparent effort to present a united front. This unity could translate into a cohesive tech policy that balances innovation with public interest. The Republicans are similarly focused on unity but strongly emphasize deregulation and national security. This approach could mean a more streamlined approach to tech policy, focused on boosting economic growth and protecting American interests.

Both parties are keenly aware of the importance of crucial battleground states, and their strategies reflect this. The Democrats will likely direct tech investments to swing states, using digital tools to reach and mobilize voters. The Republicans, too, will leverage technology to secure these crucial votes, focusing on efficiency and targeted messaging.

As I reflect on the themes emerging from the national conventions, it's clear that the future of technology intertwines with the political choices we make today. The Democrats' focus on equity, diversity, and sustainability suggests a tech landscape that could be more inclusive and socially responsible. Meanwhile, the Republicans' emphasis on deregulation, traditional values, and national security points to a future where technology harnesses the drive of economic growth and protects American interests.

As a parent, these differences aren't just political but deeply personal. They represent the world my kids will grow up in, the opportunities they'll have, and the challenges they'll face.

As I watch this election unfold, I do so with the hope that whatever path we choose leads to a future where they can thrive, contribute, and make their mark on a world that's better because of our choices today.
